Restoring the architectural beauty of a bygone era is a dream of many homeowners. Those who have tried know how difficult it is to find the right people for the job. Bill Wyminga, founder of the Wyminga Building Company, has assembled a small team of talented craftsmen who can meet the challenges of most restorations and renovations. Bill graduated with a Diploma in Horticulture from the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph. Shortly after graduation he took up his first love, carpentry. Bill graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a Certificate of Apprenticeship in Carpentry in 1994 and apprenticed under John Ellis of North Vancouver. Bill continued to hone his skills in diverse environments, among them Japan and B.C.'s Gulf Islands. Bill has been a contractor for ten years. Attention to detail underlines everything he does, whether a complicated restoration, an addition to an older home or the planning of a new, environmentally friendly home. Bill and his team have built an enviable reputation by forging close partnerships with clients, architects, suppliers, sub trades. For those who appreciate the history and classic beauty of a heritage home but want all the modern conveniences and latest technology of a new home, being able to trust a contractor to meet the various challenges is essential. Bill is driven by a desire to do every job properly and to do it well. He believes that a renovation should respect the original house and not overpower it – it should flow and blend and belong. It must enhance the original and the craftsmanship must stand out. Bill owes much to his small, carefully selected team. The five carpenters who work for him share Bill's passion and vision and bring a wealth of talent and experience to each job. They are committed to excellence, a dedication to their clients and hold themselves to very high standards. Bill, his wife Sue and their two boys have settled in Elora in an 1861 Georgian Manse, originally the home of the Chalmers Presbyterian Church Minister. The house sits at the junction of the Grand and Irvine rivers and has been designated a heritage house. Bill and Sue are currently restoring their home to its original beauty. Bill spends his spare time studying details of various architectural periods, and has developed an expertise in many, including Georgian and Arts and Crafts. He devotes many hours to upgrading his considerable skills. Although Bill will continue with renovations and restorations, he will be building his first houses in Elora, in 2008. They will be built with an eye to beauty and detail and will include recent technology for environmentally friendly homes. To that end, Bill has been studying the criteria for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designs) homes.
